A step forward in preparing for disaster - Introduction of "Carrydun" emergency evacuation chairs for stairs

To enhance capabilities to safely evacuate injured individuals and people with disabilities in the event of a disaster, the Shiga Higashiomi Plant has introduced Carrydun emergency evacuation chairs for staircases in the factory building.
These Carrydun chairs are fully operational even if power is cut, greatly improving safety during evacuation when an emergency strikes.

Outline of the initiative

Carrydun chairs are special pieces of equipment designed to enhance safety during the evacuation of injured individuals and people with disabilities if elevators stop operating due to an earthquake or fire. The primary advantage of a Carrydun chair is that it does not require a power supply, making it a highly reliable asset if the power goes out during a disaster.
Along with the incorporation of this valuable piece of emergency equipment into the disaster preparedness strategy, in-house training was conducted for about 15 employees assigned to the building. Participants operated Carrydun chairs to gain experience in responding to a disaster situation. While they take some skill to operate, after some practice, participants were able to handle them smoothly, and the experience was highly effective in raising awareness about emergency preparation.

Effects and advantages

Comments from employees who participated in the training included such observations as "It is more stable and secure than I had imagined," and "I want to practice more to be ready for emergencies."
This initiative was headed by the Environment & Safety Department and carried out in collaboration with the business division based on guidance from the Diversity Promotion Division. Introduction of Carrydun chairs not only enhances capabilities for safe evacuation in the event of disaster, but it also raises awareness about disaster prevention among employees. From participant comments, it is clear that the introduction of this equipment is not just a disaster prevention measure, but an outstanding opportunity to reinforce the company's culture of safety throughout the entire workplace.

Introduction of Carrydun chairs will enhance our ability to ensure a workplace where everyone can work with peace of mind. We will continue to strengthen disaster prevention measures from both the perspective of equipment and increased awareness, aiming to maintain an environment where safety is a priority for all employees, including those with disabilities and different degrees of physical strength.
