Takumi: The Height of Craft

Episode 5: Tea Pottery - Asahiyaki -

Asahiyaki is a pottery maker based in Uji, Kyoto, a region celebrated as the heart of tea culture in Japan. Asahiyaki has been crafting tea ware for over 400 years. Asahiyaki's distinctive pieces, crafted from local Uji clay to embody the essence of the region's natural elements, are cherished by tea practitioners around the world, and throughout history, even by feudal lords.

In this episode, we feature a conversation between Hosai Matsubayashi, the 16th-generation master potter of Asahiyaki, and Keisuke Tsuchiya, a kitchenware production engineer specializing in manufacturing ceramic knives at Kyocera.

Despite coming from entirely different industries, both are deeply involved in ceramic craftsmanship. Through this common connection, they engage in a passionate discussion, exploring the universal challenges inherent in their distinct ceramic crafts and the unifying spirit of craftsmanship that truly connects them.

His craftsmanship is deeply rooted in "Kirei Sabi" (beauty and simplicity), the aesthetic philosophy of tea ceremony master Enshu Kobori, which forms the very foundation of Asahiyaki. He primarily creates exquisite tea utensils such as tea bowls, tea caddies, water jars, and flower vases. Beyond his studio, he actively promotes the culture of tea through overseas exhibitions, tea ceremonies, and workshops. His works have been showcased at prestigious venues including the Leach Pottery in St. Ives, England, and the Guimet Museum of Oriental Art in Paris, France.
