Kyocera has partnered with French IoT network company "Sigfox" to provide low-power wide-area (LPWA) IoT network services in Japan.

The Sigfox IoT network achieves low cost, low power consumption, and long-distance transmission of IoT data stored in the cloud. By replacing the need for high data volume networks when low data volume transmission is appropriate, the Sigfox network saves costs and opens the door to previously unimagined possibilities for IoT applications.

One such application would be for security cameras. Connecting all the security cameras to a cloud-based analysis system could be very costly. With Sigfox, the camera could send data through the network only when an abnormality is detected, allowing customers to save the cost of connecting all the cameras to the network at all times.

In this article, we spoke with two engineers on this project about their vision for the future rollout of Sigfox in Japan.
