Kyocera's mmWave Radar device uses an ultra-high frequency radio wave to measure the distance and angle to an object, as well as speed. ADAS and autonomous driving systems require "blind spot detection" to identify objects not visible in the mirror, "cross-traffic alert" to identify vehicles approaching from the side when turning, and "surround-vehicle detection" when parking. While individual systems exist for each of these functions, Kyocera's device incorporates all of the features into a single unit.
Case Studies:
1. Public road demonstration of an autonomous truck organized by the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism. mmWave technology was used to detect vehicles traveling in adjacent lanes during a lane change (see video).
2. Demonstration of an autonomous driving bus sponsored by JR East. mmWave technology was used as a sensor to monitor the area around the vehicle.
