CASE in the Automotive Industry
What is Connected?
In the automotive industry, the "Connected" area is the field supporting the mobility society through communications technology.
Based around a core of ever-evolving communication technologies, links such as V2V (Vehicle-to-Vehicle communication) and V2I (Vehicle-to-Infrastructure cooperation) are used to greatly reduce the risk of accidents and to optimize traffic flow. Furthermore, communication between a vehicle and the network (V2N) enables quick information sharing in emergencies and the avoidance of daily traffic jams to contribute to more efficient travel.
Our Vision
Use communication technology to realize efficient transportation infrastructure
We are utilizing the technology Kyocera has accumulated to produce products and components that realize innovative communications technologies.
The use of advanced antenna technology for Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) and Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) communication contributes to a reduction of traffic accidents by realizing more efficient operation management and the safe sharing of information.
While conducting repeated experiments, Kyocera is using the extensive past results and technical knowledge accumulated so far as a foundation to work to realize safe and efficient transportation infrastructure for a next-generation mobility society.
Solutions in the Connected Area
Connected
Components
Board-to-Board Connectors, FPC/FFC Connectors
These are solutions for the internal connections for in-vehicle devices. Kyocera’s board-to-board connectors have a floating structure that absorbs board misalignment and vibration and ensures a secure fit. The FPC/FFC connectors are highly reliable and feature heat resistance up to 125°C, which enables their installation near the engine compartment. They also support the V-by-One® HS high-speed transmission standard and have a space-saving design. Both the board-to-board connectors and FPC/FFC connectors are available in a wide range of variations to meet diverse customer needs.

High-Precision TCXOs for GNSS
The high-precision TCXOs are highly accurate timing devices that were developed for the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) to provide stable and accurate position information. They realize excellent frequency temperature characteristics of ±0.5 ppm through the use of photolithography technology and the proprietary CVM technology of Kyocera. They are also packaged in a compact 1.6 mm x 1.2 mm package that supports space-saving and are used in automotive telematics. They provide precise and stable location information and contribute to the improvement of reliability.

Packages for SAW Devices
These are packages used for SAW devices, which are devices used in communications to allow or block the passage of specific frequencies. They use ceramic materials that realize excellent heat resistance, airtightness, and insulation, and the mass production of ultra-low profile boards with a ceramic thickness of only 0.1 mm greatly contributes to device thinning. The ceramic packages from Kyocera have responded to the increased number of parts used as the performance of SAW devices has improved and they have been favored by customers over many years. A wide range of mounting variations is utilized to support highly reliable communication infrastructure and provide safe and secure functions.

Automotive Power Branching Connectors
These are power supply branch connectors that are used for the connection of optional parts. They realize highly waterproof sealing performance and can also be used for the connection of parts added outside of the vehicle cabin, where water and dust have an impact. They support copper wire and aluminum wire. They do not require dedicated tools and can be used to easily branch a main harness. They have a highly durable design that maintains reliability, even in the harsh environments outside the cabin, and they also have excellent vibration resistance. This means that they have the reliability and functionality to support next-generation in-vehicle systems and are contributing to the evolution of mobility.

Packages/Lids for Crystal Devices
These are packages for use on crystal devices, which support the clock function and the stability of timing and frequencies. In addition to the advantages of the material, such as its high heat resistance, airtightness and insulation, it is also possible to use the wide range of mounting variations offered by Kyocera and to perform the optimum design through simulations. Furthermore, in order to meet future needs for high-speed, large-capacity, and low-delay communications, we use ceramic packages to ensure high reliability and offer safe and stable functions.

Varistors (product manufactured by KYOCERA AVX)
These are high-performance electronic components made using ceramic materials and protect automotive electronics from electrostatic discharge and surge voltages. The ASPGuard series has a compact 1.0 mm x 0.5 mm size and realizes low capacitance and narrow capacitance tolerances. It has been optimized for in-vehicle Ethernet and for communication and power supply circuits. The devices have extremely low insertion loss and leakage current and are equipped with a bi-directional protection function to provide high reliability. They offer stable voltage and capacitance characteristics and are available in a diverse product lineup, so they contribute to the improvement of vehicle performance by strengthening electrostatic discharge prevention measures and realizing space-saving designs.

Connected
Modules
LTE Communication Modules
These are LTE communication modules that comply with the 3GPP standard and have been shipped worldwide. They are suitable for applications that require high durability and high reliability, including in-vehicle applications, security, and remote monitoring. They support Cat. 4 high-speed communications (up to 150 Mbps) and realize the communication functions required for connected services.

LCDs for Head-Up Displays
The head-up display projects a virtual image onto a vehicle's windshield, contributing to safer and more comfortable driving by allowing the driver to check information without looking away from the road ahead. The head-up display's key component is the LCD (Liquid Crystal Display), which requires excellent display quality and high durability. Kyocera's LCDs, which have been supplied to the automotive industry for many years, boast high performance and contribute to suppressing the brightness of head-up display units and improving the efficiency of thermal countermeasures. We are also promoting larger LCDs to accommodate the trend toward larger and AR-enabled head-up displays, contributing to a safe and comfortable driving environment.
