Overview:What are floating type connectors?

It has a structure in which an insulator housing, colored green in the figure on the right, of a mated pair of connectors is like floating. It is impossible to mate general rigid connectors if they are mounted out of precise alignment, but is possible with the floating type connectors. Even if connectors are mounted out of alignment, it is possible for a floating type connector (colored green) to move in the floating space to mate to the counterpart connector properly. Thus the connectors absorb the positional deviation on boards and positional deviation generated in installing boards on which the connectors are mounted to the customers' units.

Advantages in using them

By using floating type connectors:
1) It is possible to use plural pairs of connectors on a single printed circuit board,
2) The degree of freedom in component layout and in circuit design increases,
3) The stress applied to the solder joints decreases to suppress solder cracks.
Kyocera's floating type connectors achieve movability of F/P*1=200% at maximum and it is possible to solve customers' problems at design by their high contact reliability.

The mated connectors are floating type connector that is movable by ±0.5mm at maximum in the direction of X and Y axes and featuring 0.5mm-pitch. (F/P*1=100%) The stacking height is at minimum 4.0mm up to 7.0mm. Complies with the high-speed transmission standard MIPI D-PHY (2.5 Gbps). The connectorsʼ dual-point contact structure ensures excellent contact reliability. Additionally, the connectorsʼ mold-style cavity shape reduces breakage when connecting or disconnecting to ensure durability. With their heat resistance up to +125 °C, they can be used for severe high temperature environments required by automotive equipment.

The mated connectors are floating type connector that is movable by ±1.0mm*2 at maximum in the direction of X and Y axes and featuring 0.5mm-pitch and 17.0mm stacking height (Vertical-Vertical). (F/P*1=200%) Two kinds of board connections are provided; one is to connect boards in parallel, and the other is to connect them vertically. With their heat resistance up to +125 °C, they can be used for severe high temperature environments required by automotive equipment. To meet a wide range of needs, the type containing power supply terminals for large current and the complex type that does not need to mount signal connector and power supply connector respectively are available.

The mated connectors are floating type connector that is movable by ±0.5mm in the direction of X and Y axes and featuring 0.635mm-pitch and 8.0mm stacking height. (F/P*1=79%) The receptacle connector is designed with side walls which make it difficult for foreign matters such as flux generated in a mounting process to become attached. An insulated surface at the bottom of the plug connector reduces the off-limit area for pattern layouts on boards, by which the bottom face is usable as pattern which is suitable for high-density mounting.

The mated connectors are floating type connector that is movable by ±0.5mm in the direction of X and Y axes and featuring 0.635mm-pitch and 11.75/12.75mm stacking height (Vertical-Vertical). (F/P*1=79%) Two kinds of board connections are provided; one is to connect boards in parallel, and the other is to connect them vertically. With their heat resistance up to +125 °C, they are suitable for automotive equipment. And their contacts have a structure to remove foreign matters (wiping effect) to realize the high contact reliability.
