KYOCERA Introduces New “rafre” Washable Smartphone
Users can keep their handsets clean by washing with foaming hand or body soap

Kyocera Corporation (President: Goro Yamaguchi) today announced the release of the new rafre smartphone for Japanese service provider KDDI Corporation. The product is a successor to the orignal DIGNO rafre, which launched in December 2015 as the world’s first hand-soap-washable smartphone. In addition to resistance against foaming hand soap, the second-generation model possesses resistance to foaming body soap. The product will be available from March 2017 in Japan, and will be offered in three colors: Pale Pink, Clear White and Light Blue.
Like its predecessor, the new rafre features resistance to hot water and a touchscreen that be can be used even when the user’s hands are wet or when wearing gloves. Furthermore, the new handset is equipped with a special cooking app which allows users to scroll through recipes, set timers and answer calls through hand gestures without having to touch the display. This allows use of the smartphone while users’ hands are coated with cooking ingredients.

1. Washable with foaming soap / touchscreen operation even when wet
The new rafre can be easily washed when it becomes dirty and possesses resistance to hot water, thus allowing use in the kitchen or while relaxing in the bathtub. Furthermore, because the touchscreen display can be operated even when the screen or the user’s hands are wet, the smartphone can be used in settings involving water or on rainy days.
2. Features cooking app that can be operated with hand gestures
With the app, users can carry out various operations through hand gestures without having to touch the display. Simple hand movements allow users to scroll through recipes, set timers and even answer calls without having to touch the device.
3. Equipped with 13-megapixel camera and high-capacity battery
|Kyocera’s propriertary image-processing AINOS Engine® enables users to take clear photos in low-light conditions. The camera is also equipped with Phase Detection AF for quick focusing, and Auto HDR which enables automated clear shooting by recreating light and shade in detail.|
With a high-capacity, long-life battery, users get peace of mind when away from chargers for a long period of time.
|4. Convenient, easy-to-use functions
Smart Sonic Receiver®: Kyocera’s proprietary Smart Sonic Receiver technology uses vibrations to transmit sound to the eardrum via the phone’s display. Users do not need to worry about correctly positioning the device’s speaker hole against the ear, and can also hear sounds (or voices) better even in noisy environments by fully covering the ear with the phone’s display.
|Weather forecast alarm clock: When the alarm clock rings the handset simultaneously reads out the weather forecast for the day. Users can also change settings so that the alarm goes off earlier on days with forecasted rain, thus mitigating potential delays and allowing better time management.
Blue Light Cut: The handset features a Blue Light Cut app for ease on the eyes and reduction of eye fatigue during prolonged usage.

*4 Water / dust resistance: Ensure that caps, etc. are attached correctly before use. Do not submerge in seawater, pools or hot springs. Do not place on sandy areas such as beaches. IPX5 refers to resistance to water projected at all angles through a 6.3mm nozzle at a flow rate of 12.5 liters/min for 3 minutes from a distance of 3 meters. IPX8 refers to resistance to immersion in tap water at ordinary temperature (static water) for 30 minutes at a depth of 1.5 meters. IP5X refers to protection against dust particles less than 75µm entering into the handset after agitation in a dust-proof test tube for 8 hours.
Shock resistance: Complying with the United States Department of Defense MIL-STD-810G Method 516.7 Shock-Procedure IV, the phone was tested by dropping a unit on plywood (lauan) at 26 angles from 1.22 meters. Cannot be guaranteed against all types of shocks. The product performance was confirmed under test conditions and cannot be guarateed against all actual usage situations. The tests do not guarantee that the handset is damage-free or breakage-free.
Compatibility with hand soap / body soap: Features water resistance of IPX5/8. Kyocera conducted a proprietary durability test (Wash cycle tests undertaken with foaming hand soap and foaming body soap through hand wash and rinsing). Utilize foaming hand soap or foaming body soap produced by Japanese manufacturers. Do not wash with kitchen / industrial-use / additive-free hand soap or industrial-use / additive-free / alkaline body soaps. When rinsing, utilize tap water (warm water with an approximate temperature of 30°C) running weakly and ensure that the foam is rinsed off well. After washing, lightly place a dry and soft cloth against the handset and adequately discharge water. Ensure that caps, etc. are attached correctly before use. Do not mix different types of hand soap or body soap. Alkaline detergents do not generate issues on handset functions but may cause color changes under high temperatures such as in bathing areas or when the detergent is warm. The product performance was confirmed under test conditions and cannot be guaranteed for washing with all types of foaming hand soap or foaming body soap. In addition, the tests do not guarantee that the handset is breakage-free. For instructions regarding washing, please check au’s Web site (product page) or the operation manual.
Usage in bathing areas: Features water resistance of IPX5/8. Kyocera conducted a proprietary test to check that the handset does not break down when splashed with hot water having approximately the same temperature (43°C or less) as that of hot water in a bathtub. Ensure that caps, etc. are securely fixed and attached before use. Do not bring the handset into bathing areas for a long time (over 1 hour). Do not submerge in hot water in the bathtub. Do not submerge in hot springs or hot water with bath powders. If submerged or splashed by any chance, or when exposed to shampoo or soap, immediately wash off with tap water. As sudden changes in temperature may cause caps and sealing components to contract and allow water to enter, bring back to normal temperature when bringing in the hanset into bathing areas from a low temperature environment. After usage, wash off with tap watter, wipe with dry and soft cloth and take out of the bathing area. The handset may not be usable in bathing areas depending on the radio wave environment.
