KYOCERA Launches ‘TORQUE G02,’ World’s First Smartphone Featuring Seawater Resistance
Featuring durability and practical functions useful in various settings
Kyocera Corporation (President: Goro Yamaguchi) today announced the launch of the new TORQUE G02 smartphone for KDDI Corporation (KDDI) — the world’s first*1 smartphone with resistance against seawater*2, enabling use undersea.

The new TORQUE G02 possesses high durability, certified to the United States Military Standard (MIL-STD-810G) in 19 categories in addition to Kyocera’s proprietary standard in two categories. It can be operated in seawater and the phone’s camera can be used underwater*3. Furthermore, because the handset is equipped with sensor-based apps useful for ocean or mountain settings, it supports use in various outdoor environments.
Ensuring security with ultra-rugged features and equipped with practical functions useful in various settings, TORQUE G02 is available in green, red and black. Launched for the Japanese market, the product is part of KDDI’s new lineup announced on May 14.
1. Enhanced durability with resistance to seawater|
With advanced rugged features, the new handset is the world’s first smartphone allowing use undersea in addition to various outdoor environments. The approximately 13-megapixel back-illuminated camera with ISP automatically switches to underwater mode when submerged, in water, enabling users to easily enjoy underwater photography*3.

The handset is compliant with a total of 21 certifications for ruggedization, including 19 categories in MIL-STD-810G tests and 2 categories from Kyocera’s proprietary tests.

2. Sensor-based apps useful in outdoor environments
In response to expanding use of smartphones in challenging outdoor settings, TORQUE G02 is equipped with sensor-based apps that provide information suitable for different outdoor environments. The handset’s durability and practical apps enable use with greater confidence.

|Obtains high-precision waveform data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in the United States. Users can check conditions of surfing points utilizing the "NAMI-ARU?" (Is there a wave?) app.||The “YAMAP” app obtains data on climbing routes and current location. Freeze-resistant and durable to low temperatures. Operates even in areas without cellular service utilizing GPS.||Detects the user’s daily exercise. Linked with a pressure sensor, the “Daily Step®” app enables users to check footstep counts and calorie consumption.||Allows use in low-pressure environments at high altitude. Equipped with the “Sky View®” app with which users can check constellations by holding the device up to the night sky.|
|3. Practical functions
Users can operate the smartphone easily even when the screen is wet or when wearing gloves. Furthermore, the display utilizes Dragontrail® X glass with high strength against drops, as well as IGZO to realize high-definition and energy conservation.
* Operation cannot be guaranteed with all types of gloves. Precision varies according to each individual case.
* There are cases in which operation is difficult depending on the type of gloves.
If the handset is wet, the screen cannot be operated with gloves.
2) Smart Sonic Receiver®
TORQUE G02 is equipped with Kyocera's proprietary technology in which the whole display vibrates to transmit sound from the other party using both sound waves and vibrations. Furthermore, by pressing the whole screen against your ear to create a cover, it is easier to hear in crowded and noisy environments.
3) Easy-to-use functions
Two front-facing speakers generate volume at over 100dB (3kHz) allowing users to enjoy music even outdoors. A large, easy-to-press button on the side can be used for receiving calls, starting frequently-used applications or changing widgets on the start screen.

Waterproof / Dust resistance: Ensure that caps are securely fixed and attached. Do not submerge in hot springs. Do not place on sandy areas such as beaches. IPX5 refers to resistance to water projected at all angles through a 6.3mm nozzle at a flow rate of 12.5 liters/min for 3 minutes from a distance of 3 meters. IPX8 refers to resistance to immersion in water for 30 minutes at a depth of 1.5 meters. IP6X refers to resistance against dust particles for testing under 75μm.
Seawater resistance: Immersion in seawater for 30 minutes at a depth of 1.5 meters at normal temperature and hydrostatic condition (artificial seawater modeled on composition off the Japanese coast). Use under depth of 1.5m. Do not use for 30 minutes or more.
Withstand load: Resistance to a surface load of 100kgf applied evenly to the overall body.
