KYOCERA Announces Release of K003 Simple Mobile Phone
Simplicity and beauty, enhancing usability a step further
May 25, 2009(This product is only available to the Japanese market.)
Kyocera Corporation (President: Tetsuo Kuba) today announced the release of the K003 Simple Mobile Phone, a new KYOCERA-branded mobile phone for the Japanese domestic “au” carrier.
Over the years, Kyocera has offered a line of simple mobile phones that can be used with a sense of reassurance and familiarity by users who are either new to mobile phones or have difficultly with operating them; these include the A5528K Simple Mobile Phone (2007), and the W62K Basic Model (2008).
In its latest offering, the K003 Simple Mobile Phone, Kyocera has drawn on all the technological know-how it has acquired over the years, together with the feedback it has received from users, to create a mobile phone that achieves even greater usability, taking readability, audibility and ease of use to a new level.
The main display is a 2.8 inch wide LCD, the largest of any au Simple Mobile Phone series handset to date. Along with "Deka Moji" (big font) and "Deka Tokei" (big clock) functions, which bring the number of related functions and features to 10, the new handset also comes with "Noise Cancellation" and "Speak Slowly" (tentative name) functions, voice recognition, a pedometer, EZ News Flash, and a 1.97 megapixel (approx.) camera with auto-focus. These functions have been incorporated into an elegant and simple design and, so as to appeal to users of all ages, the handset is available in four color variations: white, gold, pink and khaki.
The K003 is part of KDDI Corporation's new handset lineup, launched on May 25.

The 2.8 inch LCD screen used in the main display features an automated brightness adjustment function that detects ambient brightness, and a 1.4 inch LCD sub-display, for easy readability.
The K003 features new functions including "Noise Cancellation," which reduces ambient noise and allows the speaker's voice to be picked up clearly by the other party, and "Speak Slowly" (tentative name), a function that allows the user to hear the other party's voice at a slower speed. The "Clear Voice" function, which makes it easier to make out difficult-to-hear high-pitched voices, has also been carried over into the new model, making it easier to catch what young children are saying over the phone.
1.) Easy-to-press keys take into account a wide range of usability issues
Independent arrow keys, that users are less likely to press mistakenly, help to prevent erroneous operations as well as enhance usability. The call and end-call keys are distinguished not only by a different feel but also by different colors, for improved visibility. Another enhancement is a dedicated power On/Off switch in place of a power On/Off key. This means that the phone can be used with peace of mind by those who find it difficult to switch the power on or off with long key presses.
2.) Enhanced "Deka" (big) functions and features
Visibility, audibility and ease of use have been further improved by equipping the K003 with no less than 10 "Deka" (big) functions and features. These include "Deka Moji" (big characters), "Deka Tokei" (big clock), "Deka Picto" (bigger status bar at the top of the screen), "Deka Juwaon" (louder earpiece volume), "Deka Chakushinon" (louder ringing volume), "Deka Vibe" (more noticeable vibration) and "Deka Chakushin Lamp" (larger notification light), as well as the newly introduced "Deka Alarm Sound" (louder alarm volume), "Deka Menu" (larger menu display) and "Deka Strap Hole" (larger strap attachment hole).
3.) Functions to reassure first-time users
The K003 comes with a new voice recognition function that allows users to bring up configuration screens with voice commands, and a character entry practice function that allows users to practice inputting text. With the addition of functions including a light-assisted operation navigator, which directs users to the next operational key by key illumination, and a text-to-speech function that alerts users to the details of incoming calls and e-mails by voice, the K003 can be operated with ease by first-time-users or those who have difficulty using mobile phones.
4.) Support for users concerned about their health
The K003 is also newly equipped with a pedometer. As well as keeping track of how many steps users have taken, this function help to make taking care of one's health fun by displaying illustrations of foods that correspond to the number of calories burned and displaying the user's hypothetical progress along the famous Fifty-Three Stages of the Tokaido walking route, based on the distance they have walked.
The 1.97 megapixel (approx.) auto-focus camera also has a magnifying glass function that is handy for reading small print.
