The new handset supports the safety and security of children in the later elementary level age range through features such as configurable restrictions in usable apps or usage time, as well as an emergency alarm which also automatically activates the camera. In addition to its durability with resistance against water*1, dust*2 and shocks*3, the smartphone offers a range of content which is enjoyable and convenient for children. Designed with a width of 64mm and a rounded shape, the handset can be easily held by a child’s small hand and is offered in three color variations of Pink Soda, Meteor Blue and Citrus White.

Development Background

With the expansion of smartphones usage, there is a growing need for smartphone handsets specifically designed for children. While there remain concerns such as access to harmful Web sites, monthly costs and breakage from drops or exposure to water, there are many parents who still prefer to have their children carry smartphones in order to be able to confirm their safety in case of an emergency.

In order to provide children with the opportunity to enjoy and appropriately utilize smartphones, and to support children’s safety and security, Kyocera has developed the miraie based on the three concepts of “safety and security,” “durability” as well as “content-rich” through convenient features.

Main Features

Ⅰ.Ensures “Safety and Security”
1. Functions which support the safety of children and provide reassurance to parents
1) Restrictions in access to harmful Web sites
The “miraie” features a browser with a filtering function which determines the content of a Web site and automatically blocks access if the content is deemed inappropriate. Filtering levels can be arranged depending on a child's age (elementary school student / junior high school student), and can also be set up so that Web sites only permitted by the parents are accessible.
*Compatible with Wi-Fi® use. Filtering function cannot be turned off.

2) App restrictions
Apps can only be used under approval by the parents, thus providing reassurance.
*Not compliant with the Google Play Store™. Apps can only be downloaded from “au Smart Pass” (fees apply).

3) Directory restrictions
Block contacts from all persons other than those registered in the directory. This function only allows communication with persons who are recognized by the parents, thus protecting children from the risk of calls and e-mails from strangers.

2. Functions supporting appropriate smartphone use
1) Restrictions in usage time and talk time
Restrictions can be placed on the times of the day the handset can be used, for instance restricting use during school hours. In addition, it is possible to restrict the total hours*4 the phone can be used per day, as well as total call minutes per day or month*5.
*4 In order to secure safety during the night and during emergencies, usage time restrictions do not apply to calls, e-mails, SMS (short message service), location tracking, emergency alarm, and other functions.
*5 If the restricted time is exceeded during a call, the call will continue. Calls between emergency contacts are not included in the restriction time.

2) Safe language check by warning against inappropriate word usage
If a word inappropriate for use by children is entered in e-mail or other programs, a warning is displayed to indicate that it is an improper word. If applicable words are used, they are recorded in the input history, allowing review by parents.
* Supervised by the National Web Counseling Conference of Japan

3. Functions enhancing security in case of emergency
1) Emergency alarm with camera function
In times of emergency, alarms can be activated by holding down the designated key on the side of the phone and touching “Start” (or pressing the key again), which simultaneously sends location information to registered e-mail addresses. Furthermore, multiple photos of the surroundings are automatically taken and sent by e-mail.
*Up to three emergency contact numbers can be registered. Registration for Internet connection service (fees apply) is required in order to automatically send location information and photos via e-mail. Separate packet communication fees apply. The accuracy of location information may be reduced in areas with weak reception (such as underground and indoors).

2) Warnings against texting while walking
The handset detects motion and displays a warning against texting while actively walking (e.g. when crossing busy streets).

4. Parent configuration menu allows easy setting of rules/restrictions defined between parent and child
The handset features a password-secured parent configuration menu which displays a wide variety of settings in one location. Items can be easily configured and changed according to the state of use.

Preference settings:
Emergency contact / emergency alarm with camera function / directory restrictions / app restrictions / usage time restrictions / Wi-Fi restriction / restrictions for harmful Web site access / safe language check / warning against texting while walking, etc.

Ⅱ. “Durable” Against the Outdoors
Waterproof, dust resistant, and shock resistant:

In addition to compliance with the IPX5 and IPX7 waterproof standards, the handset also features dirt resistance and shock resistance equivalent to IP5X, ensuring use in outdoor activities by children. The screen utilizes Dragontrail® X glass for its display, realizing high strength. Furthermore, the display is slightly recessed, allowing additional protection by the phone’s body and providing additional durability against accidental drops.

Ⅲ. Equipped with “Content-Rich” Tools and Functions
The handset is compatible with “au Smart Pass” which allows unlimited use of popular apps and apps useful for learning*6. It displays proper character fonts and corresponds to the LINE app with a restriction in the ID search function*7.
*6 A separate subscription for “au Smart Pass” (fees apply) is required. Available content and details differ from the regular “au Smart Pass.” Google Play StoreTM cannot be used. A separate fee may be required depending on the content.
*7 Features restriction in ID searches for persons under 18 years of age. Only default stamps and stamps received as gifts can be used.
