KYOCERA Introduces DIGNO DUAL, First Android™ Smartphone in Japan to be Compatible with Both PHS and 3G Networks

Kyocera Corporation (President: Tetsuo Kuba) today announced the release of DIGNO DUAL (WX04K), the first Android™ smartphone in Japan to be compatible with both PHS (personal handy-phone system) and 3G networks*1. Realizing a dual-network smartphone is the result of Kyocera’s many years of experience with R&D in telecommunications technology. The phone will be available on the WILLCOM service network, marketed under Kyocera’s DIGNO® smartphone brand.

The DIGNO DUAL takes advantage of the benefits of both the PHS networks clear voice quality for calling, and the 3G network’s ULTRA SPEED*2 data transfer of up to 21 Mbps (down). Furthermore, the new water-resistant*3 smartphone comes equipped with a 1.2GHz dual-core CPU for simultaneous support of multiple applications.

Available in four color variations, the new phone is part of WILLCOM, Inc.’s new handset lineup.

First Android Smartphone in Japan to Work on both PHS and 3G Networks

Wider service area

Utilizing both the clear voice calling of PHS and the high-speed data transfer of the 3G networks, the new phone provides an even wider service area for the user. This provides coverage anywhere on the nation’s major roadways, within subway train stations, and in underground malls — allowing the user to roam free without worrying about their mobile phone not connecting to the network.


1. 1.2GHz dual-core CPU
The DIGNO DUAL is equipped with a 1.2GHz dual-core CPU for high-speed processing and multitask processing. For example, the user can listen to music and upload to a blog at the same time, or the handset can process multiple applications and browsers at the same time while maintaining smooth operation.

2. High-speed data transmission
With downlink speeds of up to 21Mbps with the ULTRA SPEED 3G service, users are able to view full Web pages, send and receive large files, stream videos and download applications with ease.

3. Wide range of standard features
The handset is compatible with One-Seg television reception and infrared data communication. Furthermore, the display is made of high-strength glass which is highly scratch-resistant and has a Clean-Clear-Coat surface for easy cleaning. It also has a 5-megapixel auto-focus main camera, a front-facing sub camera, and high-quality video capability.
