What is the Purpose of Life? Ehime Civic Forum (August 6, 2014)

Main quotes

I believe we must never lose the feeling of gratitude, whatever our circumstances may be. Always be thankful, and express gratitude to those around you. Similarly, we should be grateful for the society in which we live today, and for nature. In my view, maintaining such a pure mind is extremely important. At the same time, I am absolutely convinced that if we live life with such a serene and pure mind, then a wonderful future undoubtedly awaits us.

Living each day with a good and pure mind, in other words, an altruistic mind, draws forth a great strength that surpasses human understanding and supports our endeavors. It is not difficult. Everything depends on one's own mind.

We did not receive life in this world by our own choice. We acquired consciousness, but had already been born into this world through our parents before we became aware of it. Subsequently, regardless of will or choice, we have lived to this day interwoven with the human fabric of destiny and the Law of Cause & Effect. During that time, we have been assailed by misfortune. We have also been blessed with good fortune. As we encounter such trials, we refine our soul, and create a purer mind and purer soul. This, I feel, is the goal of life given to each of us.

To refine the mind is to refine the soul. Rephrasing, refining the mind elevates our personal character. The result is an enrichment of our human nature, the creation of a more beautiful human nature.
