Resolution is the number of dots per inch or dots per mm, along the print width of the printhead. The resolution is fundamentally built into the printhead by the photo masks used in manufacturing. The distribution of resolutions is very distinctly clustered as indicated by the following table. The 200 dpi and 300 dpi clusters contain the vast majority of printheads in actual production. Most applications are satisfied by these two resolutions and economies of scale favor their selection in new applications. The columns of the table show the resolutions available in each printhead series. Within each printhead series, only certain print line widths are available on existing ceramic wafers. As the world's largest producer of thermal printheads, Kyocera can work with a customer to develop a custom wafer with other resolutions and other print line widths.
