In order to hand down a better environment for a bright, warm future
 Becoming an advanced solar nation
At the 3rd World Conference on Photovoltaic Energy Conversion held in May 2003, it became clear that the world is looking to Japan to provide technological leadership in the field of solar power generation. We think that Japan could well become the world's most advanced solar nation in terms of technological innovation, adoption of solar energy and level of awareness. We are doing our part at Kyocera to help Japan become the kind of country that deserves the respect and trust of the international community in using solar power to address global environmental issues.

 A 6% reduction in green-house gases
The Kyoto Protocol was adopted in 1997 at the 3rd Session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP3) held in Kyoto. At that time, Japan pledged to reduce greenhouse gases by 6% of the 1990 level. The Japan Institute of Energy then established a New Energy Division, which set the target for solar power generation at 4.82 gigawatts by 2010. This is equivalent to a 15 time increase over 2000 levels. A great deal of expectation rests on the shoulders of Kyocera to help generate this amount of solar power.

Turning deserts into vast energy fields
The electrolysis of water using solar power produces hydrogen, which is being hailed as a new source of energy today through the use of hydrogen-powered fuel cells. This energy can be used anywhere in the world. By covering desert areas with solar power generation systems, for example, and using them to electrolyze groundwater, deserts can become vast energy fields. With the miniaturization of these systems, hydrogen can even be produced in the home. Combining solar power systems with fuel cells in "renewable fuel cells"is one of the projects being worked on now at Kyocera.

Creating a society that is content with what you have
For solar power generation to spread, a transformation needs to take place in society. This involves a shift away from the mass production and mass consumption that leads to destruction of the global environment, to an acceptance that we have enough material goods to live in harmony with nature. Advanced nations need to take the lead in addressing over consumption and place new priority on saving the environment, even if it means making small sacrifices. People will then come to recognize the benefits of using solar energy, which will lead to spectacular new advances in solar cells.

Solar energy is limitless. We should use this gift of nature.
The amount of underground oil reserves that remain to exploit on this planet will last only 40 more years, 60 years for natural gas, before these sources dry up completely. Even if new deposits of oil and natural gas are discovered in the future, the problem of global warming from carbon dioxide emissions will only worsen. Solar power, on the other hand, is a limitless source of energy, and a clean way to produce electricity. Kyocera has business bases throughout the world through which we are encouraging the spread of solar power systems to help solve the problem of global warming.
