Solar Collaboration between SHIKI and KYOCERA Begins
(This document was translated from the Japanese press release.)
December 12, 2006

Shiki Theatre Company (Headquarters: Yokohama) has installed a large-scale solar power generating system manufactured by Kyocera Corporation (Headquarters: Kyoto) in its Shiki Arts Center, which is the world's largest rehearsal facility and is used to train company actors. The system began full operation on December 1.

The solar power generating system comprises 1,540 solar panels on the facility's roof, and produces a total of 300 kW of power, representing the largest output capacity in Kanagawa Prefecture for solar modules installed in a private facility.

Solar modules supply power for the rehearsal lighting and audio
Shiki Theatre Company has all of its rehearsal rooms on the south side of the building. A full wall of windows provides plenty of natural light, encouraging the actors to rehearse while keeping the usage of electricity to a minimum. Every office desk, aisle and staircase has manual/electrical equipment to ensure that the company members and staff do not use excess electricity. As part of these energy-saving initiatives, solar power generation now provides part of the electricity consumed within the facility.

Kyocera's solar modules supply part of the power used for lighting under which the future stars at Shiki rehearse to hone their skills. Through this initiative, which Shiki and Kyocera named, "Solar Collaboration", the actors and the entire staff have proclaimed that their group will continue to make a contribution to the environment.

Ideals in harmony: Solar Collaboration
Construction of Shiki Arts Center was completed this July. The company trains approximately 600 actors in this facility to entertain people in Japan and overseas with the excitement of the performing arts.

It has taken Shiki Theatre Company more than 50 years from its founding to reach its current state. The joy of acquiring such an ideal space for conducting creative activities, the company would like to show their gratitude to audiences and society.

It is Shiki's philosophy to present high quality theatre arts widely to society. To reach a wide range of audiences with the wonders and excitements of the theatre arts, Shiki is dedicated to maintain ticket prices at an affordable level. To that end, the company strives to minimize costs in its activities. Saving electricity is one such initiative. Shiki has long had a policy of energy conservation, and has always been eco-conscious.

Kyocera had focused on solar power generation as an essential energy source to develop a sustainable society where humans would not burden the environment, and had started the solar energy business some 30 years ago, striving as a pioneer to commercialize and spread the technology. Today, Kyocera works to promote the expansion of solar energy across different countries and regions for home and public/industrial use as well as to provide electricity to non-electrified villages that are unlikely to have a source of electricity.

The aim of Kyocera's solar energy business goes beyond short-term profits to contribute to the evolution of human society as viewed from a long-term perspective.

Supporting Kyocera's philosophy and strenuous efforts, Shiki decided to show its gratitude to society by contributing to the future of the global environment. Shiki made a decision to install solar power generation with the intention of playing its part, in collaboration with Kyocera, to promote the spread of solar energy.

Shiki Theatre Company presents enchantment and excitement to society through its stages, as well as contributes to the development of the theatre arts. Kyocera develops and manufactures products through various technologies and provides new value to society. Although the two operate in different fields, the objectives are united when it comes to protecting the environment. The ideals in harmony have given birth to this Solar Collaboration.
