Kyocera Corporation releases a new line of liquid-crystal displays (LCDs) that feature a unique light-emitting diode (LED) backlighting system instead of conventional cold-cathode fluorescent lamps (CCFLs). The new LCD products, which bigin shipping in September 2006, are designed to meet a wide range of industrial display applications, including manufacturing equipment, test and measurement equipment, and medical systems.

Outline
Environmentally friendly LCDs for industrial applications play a major role in Kyocera's
liquid crystal business. Demand for these products has been increasing in line with demand
for electronic equipment in general. Kyocera achieved an "industry first" in September 2004
when it successfully commercialized LCDs that comply with the RoHS Directive, which restricts the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment.*
Kyocera now introduces LCDs that feature LED backlighting, which avoid the use of mercury and offer new benefits in environmental friendliness and performance.
By integrating the company's technical expertise in LCDs with the excellent performance properties of LEDs, Kyocera plans to develop and commercialize LCDs with LED backlighting, which will be available in sizes ranging from 3.5" to 10.4". These new products will be released sequentially beginning in September 2006.
*Mercury in compact fluorescent lamps not exceeding 5 mg per lamp is exempted from application of the RoHS Directive.
Features
1. Mercury-free and environmentally friendly
The CCFLs used for backlighting in conventional LCDs contain mercury. In comparison,
Kyocera's LCDs with LED backlighting are mercury-free, offering a significant benefit to the environment.
2. Inverter-free design reduces power consumption
LCDs with LED backlighting require no inverters, which are essential in CCFLs. No high-voltage power source is required, making it easier to obtain safety standard
certification. In addition, since there is no inverter, the need for EMI suppression is greatly reduced or eliminated.
3. High-reliability backlighting
Kyocera's on-chip LEDs offer improved vibration and shock resistance over CCFLs, which incorporate glass tubes.
4. Low-temperature performance benefits
CCFLs require considerable time to turn "on" in low-temperature conditions. LEDs offer much faster start-up performance in these environments.
5. Flexible luminance capability
LEDs allow luminance to be controlled in response to current. A "low luminance" mode is thus possible for operating environments with low ambient lighting, which further reduces power consumption and extends battery life.
