in the Field of Cutting Tool Business
(This document was translated from the Japanese press release.)
May 08, 2006

Kyocera Corporation, a Japan-based manufacturer of cutting edge electronic components and devices, and Sandvik Aktiebolag, a Swedish high-tech engineering and manufacturing company, today announced that they had entered into a patent cross-license agreement on April 18, 2006.

Under the terms of the agreement, Kyocera is licensed for the use of several patents relating to cutting insert for metal cutting which Sandvik holds, and Sandvik reciprocally is licensed to use several patents which Kyocera holds.

This agreement is to resolve all cutting-insert-technology-related disputes between the parties, which have been involved since February 2004.

Glossary for better understanding

* Patent License Agreement:
An agreement to give a license to a third party to use a patent owned by a company which receives royalties in consideration of the license. "To use a patent" means to use a method or to make or sell a product disclosed in the patent. To authorize each other to use patents owned by both parties is "cross-license."

* Cutting Insert:
Cutting and grinding are methods for processing metals with means to remove a part of the metals. Cutting is a method to scrape a surface off with a tool pressed on the surface, and grinding is a method to grind a surface by using a grindstone. A tool used for the cutting process is called "cutting tool," and a detachable edge portion is called "insert."
