KYOCERA Develops OCVCXO-166A and OCXO-167A
Two Miniature, High-Frequency Crystal Oscillators for Industrial Equipment
(This document was translated from the Japanese press release.)
September 29, 2005

Kyocera Corporation (Chairman and CEO: Yasuo Nishiguchi) is pleased to announce that Kyocera Kinseki Corporation (President: Isao Kishimoto), a Kyocera subsidiary that develops and manufactures crystal products, has developed two high precision crystal oscillators, OCVCXO-166A and OCXO-167A. These products are designed for use mainly in the industrial equipment market. Mass production is scheduled to start in October.

[Outline of the Two Products]

Miniature High-Precision Oven Controlled Crystal Oscillator, OCVCXO-166A

There has been growing demand for crystal oscillators that supply highly stable and precise frequency for applications like industrial equipment, wireless devices for trains, and medical test instruments. With devices becoming increasingly compact and multifunctional, high precision crystal oscillators need to be compact, while maintaining the characteristics.
Kyocera Kinseki has created a miniature crystal unit incorporated into a high precision crystal oscillator, something that has been previously unattainable. The result is the development of a miniature high-precision oven controlled crystal oscillator, OCVCXO-166A. This product is the smallest in the industry*. Mass production is scheduled to start in October 2005.

High-Precision, High-Frequency Oven Controlled Crystal Oscillator, OCXO-167A
Crystal oscillators for applications like industrial equipment and instruments for measuring data transfer speed need to supply highly stable frequency. For this reason, these products are most commonly low-frequency products ranging from 5 to 20MHz. In recent years, high frequencies ranging up to several tens of gigahertz have increasingly been used for wireless communications. With conventional low-frequency products, the frequency difference becomes greater, and this results in a deterioration of characteristics. Consequently, there has been growing demand for high precision crystal oscillators that provide very reliable support for high frequencies.
Kyocera Kinseki increases the output frequency of crystal oscillators to 100MHz, ten times greater than the base frequency used for conventional measurement insturments, and minimizes the phase noise generated as frequencies increase. The result is the successful development of a high-precision, high-frequency oven controlled crystal oscillator, OCXO-167A. Mass production is scheduled to commence in October 2005.

[Features of the Two Products]

Miniature High-Precision Oven Controlled Crystal Oscillator, OCVCXO-166A

1) Size reduced to one fourth that of conventional products, the smallest in the industry

With the introduction of oven control and the crystal unit developed by Kyocera Kinseki, the size of this product has been dramatically reduced, to one fourth that of conventional products. At of 13.1 x 20.8 x 10.0mm, this product is the smallest of its kind. With a height of 10 millimeters, it can be mounted on a half-inch throttle substrate, reducing the size of the overall device.

2) Supporting Stratum 3* devices
This product minimizes the impact of compact size on reliability of frequencies, and ensures that the precision of temperature characteristics is maintained at +/-0.28x10-6(real value +/-0.1x10-6.) It supports devices based on Stratum 3, data communications standard.
* Standards of signal systems for data communications in the United States. There are five types of standards by precision level: 1, 2, 3e, 3, 4, from highest to lowest.

Main Specifications
 Frequency range  10 - 50MHz
 Voltage  +5 V
 Output waveform  CMOS
 Overall tolerance  Within +/-4.6 x 10-6 (20 years)
 Temperature characteristics  Within +/-0.28 x 10-6 /-10 to +60 C.
Aging characteristics  Within +/-0.2 x 10-6/ One year
 Frequency control range  +/-1x10-6 or higher/ 0 to +5V
Consumption current  200mA or less/ under a steady state

High-Precision High-Frequency Oven Controlled Crystal Oscillator, OCXO-167A

1) Output frequency of 100MHz, ten times that of the conventional base frequency

This product increases output frequency to 100MHz, ten times that of the base frequency used for conventional measurement insturments. It maintains temperature and aging characteristics equivalent to conventional products, and consequently provides a highly stable frequency for the base frequency.

2) Low phase noise characteristics
Generally, as frequency rises, phase noise deteriorates. Kyocera Kinseki employs its unique technology to minimize the impact, and provides the highest level of characteristics in the industry. This product reduces the noise that depends on the base crystal oscillator of the device, and bolsters the performance of the overall device. This makes it possible to perform high-precision measurements and to use signals in the high frequency range.

Main Specifications
