KYOCERA Develops the CX3225SB, a Miniature Low-Frequency Quartz Crystal Unit
The World¡Çs Smallest * in the 4MHz Frequency Range
(This document was translated from the Japanese press release.)
September 29, 2005

Kyocera Corporation (Chairman and CEO: Yasuo Nishiguchi) is pleased to announce that Kyocera Kinseki Corporation (President: Isao Kishimoto), a Kyocera subsidiary that develops and manufactures crystal products, has developed a miniature low-frequency quartz crystal unit, the CX3225SB series. This product has been developed by the Electronic Components Division, and it is the world's smallest in the 4MHz frequency range.

Outline
With cellular handsets, personal digital assistants (PDAs), handheld game players, and other digital devices becoming increasingly multifunctional, there has been growing demand in the market for compact sizes and reduced power consumption. As one of the key components in digital devices that oscillate at high-precision frequencies, quartz crystal units need to provide support for low frequencies, to enable digital devices to become smaller and to reduce battery power consumption.
Kyocera Kinseki has responded to this demand by focusing on the oscillating pattern for output frequencies from crystal fragments installed in the crystal units. Kyocera Kinseki has shifted from conventional thickness-shear mode oscillation to Lame-mode oscillation. The result is the successful development of a miniature low-frequency quartz crystal unit. This product is the world's smallest in the 4MHz frequency range. Samples will be delivered from November and mass production is scheduled to commence in April 2006 with monthly output of 100,000 units.

Product Features
1) The world's smallest in the 4MHz frequency range (3.5MHz to 5MHz)
If elements are made thinner in conventional thickness-shear mode oscillation, oscillation frequency will increase, so products cannot be made smaller in the 4MHz frequency range. Kyocera Kinseki thus decided to introduce Lam-mode oscillation, in which overall crystal fragments oscillate. This enabled the product to be built at 3.2 x 2.5 x 0.55mm in the 4MHz frequency range (3.5MHz to 5MHz.) The product boasts dramatically reduced size, at one twenty-seventh that of conventional quartz crystal units of 11.8 x 5.5 x 1.8mm in the 4MHz frequency range.

2) Offering greater equipment power saving using the low frequency range
The low frequency range of 3.5 to 5MHz is used to reduce the burden of splitting frequencies for IC of the oscillating circuits. Hence, this product reduces power consumption by approximately 30 percent compared with our conventional product. This product offers greater power savings for mobile communications terminals requiring compact size and power saving, such as miniature tuners, PDAs, DVD portable players, and handheld game players.

3)RoHS Directive compliance
This quartz crystal unit is lead-free, and complies with the RoHS Directive, the European Union's Restriction of Certain Hazardous Substances, which will become effective in July 2006. It is also compatible with the reflow profile of lead-free solder.
