KYOCERA to release SAW Filters for Mobile Phones Compatible with Terrestrial Digital Television
Low Loss in TV Signal Band and High Attenuation Level in Cellular Signal Band
(This document was translated from the Japanese press release.)
September 29, 2005

Kyocera Corporation (Chairman and CEO: Yasuo Nishiguchi) is pleased to announce that Kyocera Kinseki Corporation (Head Office: Komae, Tokyo, President: Isao Kishimoto), a Kyocera subsidiary that develops and manufactures electronic devices, has developed Surface Acoustic Wave (SAW) filters SL2525E series for mobile phones compatible with terrestrial digital television. The filters are small and lightweight, and require no external circuit elements.

Outline
With the launch of terrestrial digital TV broadcasting systems for mobile applications (one segment broadcasting) scheduled in April 2006, shipments of cellular handsets enabling users to watch programs are expected to rapidly increase to seven million units in 2006 and eighteen million units in 2007, according to research by Navian Inc. SAW filters now need to provide new functionality for mobile phones enabling users to watch terrestrial digital TV programs. They need to select video signals for TV applications along with radio signals for calls.
Responding to this demand, Kyocera has developed SAW filters for mobile phones that are compatible with terrestrial digital television. The filters are capable of passing video signals for TV applications with lower loss, and attenuating transmission signals for mobile phones at high level. In the past, externally mounted elements such as capacitors and inductors were needed to provide the filtering function. Kyocera integrates these elements into a single package for the first time, providing small, light, and highly functional mobile phones that enable users to watch terrestrial digital TV programs. This product also helps reduce the design and evaluation burden. Production is scheduled to commence in December 2005 at Kyocera Kinseki on a monthly production basis of 100,000 units, and the products will be sold through the Electronic Components Sales Division, Kyocera Corporation.

Product Features
1) Integrating elements into a single package to make mobile phones smaller and lighter and to reduce the design and evaluation burden
External elements such as inductors and capacitors have usually been required to provide the filtering function. By taking advantage of Kyocera's unique simulation and assembly technologies, Kyocera has successfully integrated these elements into a single package. This makes mobile phones smaller and lighter, and reduces the design and evaluation burden.

2) Excellent filtering characteristics
Kyocera provides excellent passing signal filtering characteristics by lowering the loss to 2.4dB typ. in the 470 to 770MHz video signal band for terrestrial digital broadcasting applications, and by achieving a high attenuation level of 50dB typ. in the 898 to 925MHz signal band used by domestic mobile carriers. This product selects video signals alone for TV applications without interfering with radio waves used for calls.

3) RoHS Directive compliance
This product is a lead-free SAW filter, and complies with the RoHS Directive, the European Union”Ēs Restriction of Certain Hazardous Substances to be enforced in July 2006. It is also compatible with the reflow profile of lead-free solder.
