July 04, 2005
Kyocera (Chairman and CEO: Yasuo Nishiguchi) has announced that it will be cosponsoring the 2005 Children's World Summit for the Environment, which is scheduled to be held in Aichi prefecture from July 26 to 29 of this year.
The Children's World Summit for the Environment was first held in Eastbourne in the United Kingdom in 1995 having been passed in a resolution at the UN Conference on Environment and Development (the Earth Summit) in 1992. With the UN Children's Conference on the Environment being held in different countries around the world at the initiative of the UN Environment Program (UNEP) since then, this year marks the 6th time that the event has been held.
The 2005 Children's World Summit for the Environment, which also marks the first time that the event has been held in Asia, will have his Imperial Highness Prince Akishino as its Honorary President and will be held in Aichi prefecture alongside Expo 2005, which is currently underway.
The event will bring together approximately 650 children aged between 10 and 14 from approximately 60 different countries around the world (including 250 Japanese participants). They will discuss themes decided upon by a group of delegates acting on their behalf. The main theme chosen for this year's event is taking action to create a sustainable society.
In addition to contributing to the development of society through the proliferation of new energy technology as part of its solar energy business, Kyocera is also aiming to help create an ideal global environment for the future in which the children who will shoulder the next generation can live. Unlike fossil fuels, which are unevenly distributed, the sun represents a clean energy source that everyone can benefit from no matter where they are in the world. Kyocera is working hard to steadily increase the use of solar energy on a global scale in order to light up the lives of people around the world, from people in villages with no electricity who have grown accustomed to living like that to people who need electricity to keep vaccines in cold storage and children studying in schools with no lights in the classrooms.
Kyocera fully supports the aim of the Children's World Summit for the Environment in bringing children from around the world together in one place to think and talk about the earth's environment and society in the future and believes that their discussions will be similar in significance to the philosophy behind its solar energy business. It is with this in mind that Kyocera is cosponsoring this event.
Kyocera intends to make every effort to use its own publications, including the Kyocera website and solar energy promotional material, to raise awareness about the 2005 Children's World Summit for the Environment. Furthermore, as part of the scheduled program of workshops and field trips on the first day of the summit, Tuesday July 26, Kyocera will be running English classes on solar energy and the environment, giving participating children from around the world an opportunity to learn about solar energy (venue: Toyota Industry Culture Center).

<The logo for the 2005 Children's World Summit for the Environment>
The logo depicts the emotions and discoveries produced by the summit in the form of five children's faces showing happiness, laughter, surprise, thinking and speaking. The fact that the children's faces are all linked together by a common thread symbolizes exchange. The five loops, which are drawn freehand in a single stroke giving the logo a hand-drawn feeling of warmth, represent the earth's five continents. The shades of green used are intended to evoke images of the environment.
*Kyocera will use this logo in promotional materials and other publications as part of its efforts to raise awareness of the summit.
<Kyocera's solar generation system - in operation at Expo 2005 Aichi>
As part of the project sponsored by the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO), Kyocera has set up a large scale 200kW solar power generator in one corner of the Expo 2005 Aichi venue.
With 1,200 solar panels spread out over 150 meters, this system will give visitors from around the world a real vision of energy creation of the near future.
