Kyocera Provides Base Stations and Terminals for
Commercial Service Launch of " iBurstTM System" ,
Next-Generation Wireless Internet Access Technology,
in South Africa from April 1

(This document was translated from the Japanese press release.)
March 31, 2005

Kyocera Corporation (President: Yasuo Nishiguchi) is pleased to announce the launch of the commercial service of the iBurst system in the Republic of South Africa from April 1, 2005. The iBurst system is a next-generation wireless Internet access technology, for which Kyocera develops and produces base stations and terminals.

Kyocera will deliver fifty base stations and 20,000 terminals to the South African communications service carrier Wireless Business Solutions (Pty) Ltd., (WBS, CEO: Mlungisi Hlongwane) by June this year.

WBS will commence the service in Johannesburg, Pretoria, Cape Town and Durban and will then continually expand the service areas. The company aims to acquire 100,000 subscribers within three years of the launch of the service.

The iBurst system offers a wireless broadband Internet environment that enables users to receive at a maximum rate of 1 Mbps for downlinks, and enjoy streaming videos such as movies within the area. This ability to allow a large number of users to simultaneously enjoy stable, high-speed connections is enabled by a total transmission capacity of approximately 24 Mbp at maximum within the area covered by a single base station, along with high data transmission efficiency at each frequency. The iBurst series offers two types of terminals: a mobile PCMCIA card type and an indoor-use desktop type.

Kyocera obtained licenses for experimental wireless stations for the iBurst system in Japan last December. It is currently evaluating the functions and performance properties of the iBurst system, including radio and throughput properties, to further raise the level of functions and performance.
South Africa will be the second country to start commercial services of the iBurst system after Australia, where Kyocera achieved the world first with the service launch last March.
While improving the functions and performance of the iBurst system, we are helping a large number of people achieve a better quality of life by proposing and providing the iBurst system to communications carriers around the world. We aim at sales of 30 billion yen for this business in fiscal 2007.
