February 23, 2005

Kyocera Corporation (President: Yasuo Nishiguchi) is pleased to announce the impending release of the building-integrated photovoltaic (PV) systems in the Japanese and U.S. markets in March 2005. Mainly targeting newly-built houses, the systems are compatible with flat roof tiles.

Background
The most popular solar power generating system for residential buildings today is the conventional roof mount type which is installed on existing roofs. It is anticipated that the building-integrated PV systems, in which solar modules double as roof materials, will enjoy growing demand in future for application to newly-built, expanded or renovated buildings.
In June 2003, Kyocera introduced to the Japanese market a roof mount type system based on the "Stylish & Powerful" concept featuring a smart design and higher power output under the SAMURAI brand. It also released the standard system named ECONOROOTS using conventional rectangular solar modules in April, 2004. Kyocera has supplied the residential PV generation market with these two product lines since then.
Kyocera is now preparing to increase its production capacity to 20MW per month (240MW per year). The launch of a plant in Europe scheduled in April this year completes Kyocera's global structure featuring four bases (in Japan, China, North America and Europe) to further enhance its global operations.

Summary
Flat tiles are one of the roof materials that are increasingly being employed in the Japanese and U.S. newly-built housing markets. Kyocera will launch the new building-integrated PV systems targeting the flat tile roofing in both countries at the same time.
The new systems consist of two modules of different sizes (long and short) to produce "stylish" and "powerful" features.

Features
1. Harmony with the roof to produce a stylish look
Flat tiles are characterized by their aesthetic features that provide roofs with a rhythmic, dignified and sophisticated look. In Kyocera's building-integrated PV systems, solar modules can be installed by "step roofing," just like flat tile roofing. The systems also use the "d.Blue" cells with prestigious color tone that harmonizes with the buildings to produce a beautiful sense of unity with a flat tiled roof without degrading the home's aesthetics.
The solar modules themselves function as roof materials and require no flat tiles where they are installed. This means that the new systems can be economically installed at a reduced cost.

Improved design

2. Two differently sized (long and short) modules to fill more of the roof surface
A combination of two different sizes (long and short) of solar modules designed based on the standard size of flat tiles ensures efficient use of the rooftop space, not only on span roofs but also on other roofs with complex configurations such as hip or complex roofs, as well as beautiful tile alignments.

3. Easy maintenance
As solar modules are individually installable and removable, the systems are easy to maintain.

4. Equipped with a rib that stops snow from sliding down (for the Japanese model of "HEYBAN" only)
For improved safety against snow that slides off the roof, the HEYBAN systems for the Japanese market consist of ribbed modules designed for regions with minor snow accumulation not exceeding 30 centimeters.
