Kyocera Corporation (President: Yasuo Nishiguchi) is announcing the release of the Kyocera Finecam SL400R 4-megapixel digital camera in early March 2004. The camera features high-speed, consecutive shooting up to the maximum capacity of the memory card at a maximum of 3.3 frames per second (*2) and the world's thinnest 15-mm-thick, full-flat body (*3)

(Body color: Silver, Front panel color: Silver)

The Kyocera Finecam SL400R is a superior model to the Kyocera Finecam SL300R released last October, featuring the high-speed, full-memory consecutive shooting, the high image quality and an original design. The digital camera incorporates a 3x optical zoom lens and features an even higher pixel value.
The product allows high-speed, full-memory consecutive shooting at high image quality, so you can enjoy a new photographic style of digital camera, ''shooting consecutively to capture the perfect moment.'' By using the consecutive shooting function in everyday circumstances, you can easily capture the fleeting expressions of children and the movement of pets, and you can select the best shots afterwards.
The camera features the Easy-Framing Body with a rotating lens part that allows you to find the most flexible position for shooting.

27 Colors Campaign (*1)
We will be holding the 27 Colors Campaign for a limited time, starting with the release of the Kyocera Finecam SL400R until May 31, 2004. If you select a body color that you like from the standard three kinds, purchase it and submit an application for the campaign, you can select one of nine colors (*4) to replace the front panel of the camera. In this way, you can select your camera color from 27 different combinations.

Background to the development
The Kyocera Finecam SL300R released last October has been warmly accepted by the market due to its high level of functionality as a digital camera and its improved appearance as a fashion item, evidenced by the color campaign that allows users to select the color of their choice. The Kyocera Finecam SL400R to be released soon has been developed as a 4-megapixel camera in response to the nature of the market and the user need for a higher pixel value. The camera expands the lineup of the Finecam series. To enhance the appearance of the camera as a fashion item, which was a popular feature of the Finecam SL300R, we offer a selection of 27 color combinations in addition to the unique three variations (*5) during the campaign period (*1).

*1) The campaign is limited to Japan.
*2) Full-memory consecutive shooting means shooting successively at high speed until the full capacity of the memory card is used. It is available when using an SD memory card formatted by the camera body with a transfer speed of at least 10 MB per second for high-speed recording. Even with a transfer speed of 10 MB per second, the camera may not perform to the maximum depending on the type of memory card. Free capacity may remain in the memory card depending on the shooting conditions. The consecutive shooting speed differs depending on the shooting conditions, camera settings and memory card status.
*3) Compared to the compact digital cameras with an optical zoom as of February 1, 2004.
*4) The panel colors are: Light blue, silver, burgundy, cherry blossom pink, blue, wave silver, green, orange and charcoal.
*5) SL400R will be released worldwide with a silver body. SL400R will be released in Japan only, with a burgundy or pearl blue body.

Features of the product

1. The Kyocera Proprietary Image Processing System, RTUNE

High-speed, full-memory consecutive shooting
The Finecam SL400R provides full-memory, consecutive shooting at a maximum of 3.3 frames per second at highest recording image size (when Normal image quality is selected) while boasting high 4,000,000 effective pixels. The liquid-crystal monitor follows the display images in real time during consecutive shooting. It is sometimes difficult to photograph subjects, as in the case of children or pets with fleeting expressions, moving subjects in at a sporting event or a group photograph with a number of people. Taking consecutive photographs enables you to select the best shots afterward. Unexpected photos may also result from consecutive shooting. Kyocera believes that this new photographic style is the great advantage that digital cameras have over conventional cameras.

Close to the fastest performance in the industry
The camera starts up in less than one second and features a shutter time-lag of approximately 0.07 seconds, giving the camera close to the fastest performance in the industry. When you turn on the camera, you don't have to wait for it to be ready, and when you take photographs, the camera responds when you press the shutter, so you can seize the exact moment to take your shots.

Images with a fine array of gradations
The high-speed processor of the image processing system, RTUNE, consists of an analog front end and a digital processor. It first adjusts the RGB color balance of the analog data received in the CCD at the analog front end, and then converts it to a digital signal (A/D conversion).
The A/D conversion process provides 16-bit internal conversion of the data and sends it as 12-bit digital data to the next digital processor. The digital processor that receives the digital data produces the final image data and outputs it at high speed, creating low-noise digital data. By drastically reducing a wide range of noise generated in the digital images, it is possible to reproduce natural color and a fine array of gradations. To reproduce clear images, the image pickup device of the Kyocera Finecam SL400R uses a 1/2.7'' square pixel CCD with an original color filter, featuring 4,230,000 pixels in total.

2. The World's Thinnest 15mm Design. Easy-Framing Body with a Rotating Lens Part
The camera features a 15mm full-flat body, making it the world's thinnest body for a compact digital camera incorporating a zoom lens. This thin, full-flat camera boasts outstanding portability and can easily be put in a breast pocket or bag.
The Easy-Framing Body with a rotating lens part allows you to find a comfortable position to shoot under a wide range of photographic situations, irrespective of whether shooting at a high or low angle or shooting with macro, while watching the liquid crystal monitor.

3. High-Resolution, 3x Optical Zoom Lens and 3.2x Digital Zoom
The camera incorporates a high-resolution 3x optical zoom lens, from a focal length of 5.8 mm (wide-angle) to 17.4 mm (telephoto), which is equivalent to approximately 38 mm to 115 mm in the 35-mm format cameras.
By combining these features with the 3.2x digital zoom that minimizes the deterioration of image quality, you can shoot at a maximum of 9.6x zoom. You can also use a digital zoom of up to 8x when playing back images.

4.Superfine, Smooth Recording Function for VGA Moving Images with Audio
The camera enables you to easily shoot superfine, smooth moving images of VGA size (640 x 480 pixels) with audio at 30 frames/second up to the maximum capacity of the memory card(*4)
The record file is in AVI format and you can play it back easily on the liquid crystal monitor of the camera or a personal computer. (To play back your moving images on a personal computer, it is necessary to install QuickTime 4.1 or later.)

(*4) It is possible to shoot moving images up to the maximum capacity of the memory card when using an SD memory card with a transfer speed of at least 10 MB per second for high-speed recording. Even with a transfer speed of 10 MB per second, the camera may not perform to the maximum depending on the type of memory card (Free capacity may remain depending on the shooting images).

5.A Scene Mode Facilitates the Photographic Settings According to the Situation
The camera incorporates a scene mode that enables the camera to make the most suitable photographic settings according to the situation, based on seven predefined settings. They are: Standard, Sport, Portrait, Night View, Night View Portrait, Macro and Distant View. Each of the settings can be easily selected using the scene button.
